Cooking with Coals

Whether you are new to campfire cooking or are looking to master the camp oven, there are a few basic techniques you can learn that will help you to become a cast iron pro in no time. One of which includes coal ratio and camp oven positioning.

The graph below outlines the different cooking methods and recommended coal placements for optimal temperatures.

While coal ratio is important, you may still be wondering, "How do I regulate the heat of my camp oven?". This question comes with the common misconception that the hottest part of the fire is the flames. To avoid burning the outside of your meal while the inside remains raw, you want consistent heat and the best way to achieve this is by creating a designated cooking area. This will make it much easier to manage your heat. Simply let your coals burn down to the white-hot coals then pile them together on one side of the pit. You will not only have great cooking coals, but you will also have a roaring fire.
